Since first highlighting the issue in August 2020, the APPG on Coronavirus has been calling on the government to recognise long Covid as an occupational disease and to provide formal guidance to employers.
Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion and vice-chair of the APPG on Coronavirus, said: “When it comes to the availability of ambulance staff, it really is a matter of life or death and these statistics highlight the devastating impact long Covid is having on our emergency services which are“Frontline workers exposed themselves to the virus while saving others during the pandemic and the Government cannot continue to ignore their sacrifice.
Earlier this week, analysis by the APPG suggested NHS trusts in England lost more than a million working days to long Covid absences last year – worse than the same point in 2020. A Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: “We are backing our world-leading scientists with over £50m to better understand the long-term effects of this virus and make treatments available. NHS staff are able to seek support for long Covid from their GP or one of the 90 specialist clinics available nationwide. The NHS has also committed £224m to support people with ongoing symptoms of long Covid, in addition to a further £90m for next year.
