The likelihood of an infection from a blood transfusion today is 'low', with no recent cases of HIV or Hepatitis C linked to blood transfusion
Before donors give blood they must complete a donor safety check, which sees them complete a questionnaire in which they are asked confidential questions about their medical history and lifestyle. NHSBT said that the likelihood of getting an infection from the blood transfusion is “low”, with no cases of HIV or Hepatitis C linked to blood transfusion for more than two decades.
NHS experts said they expected that only a small number of donors will have had previous Hepatitis B infection, and that those donors will no longer be eligible to donate. Officials immediately tightened up screening once again. Where risks and problems are identified, SHOT produces recommendations to improve patient safety. The recommendations are put into its annual report which is then circulated to all the relevant organisations including the four UK Blood Services, the Departments of Health in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and all the relevant professional bodies as well as circulating it to all of the reporting hospitals.
“So there’s always the known unknowns, if you like. And then there’s the known knowns, so steps are taken to minimise risk, but you can never guarantee that the risk is zero. Plasma from UK donors was not used for immunoglobulin, used to normalise a compromised immune system, between the years 1998 and 2021 as a precaution against Variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease or vCJD, commonly known as “mad cow’s disease”.
