RAAC is a lightweight but reinforced concrete that contains air bubbles and was largely used in UK construction around the 1950s and 60s.

NHS bosses have insisted that the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital is safe after dangerous concrete was removed from its building.

The material has led to the closure of hundreds of schools across England this week, including two in Lancashire.Data obtained by the Mirror revealed that hospitals across the country had also used RAAC in their construction, including two in Lancashire. Blackpool Victoria Hospital has two blocks made of RAAC as does the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.

"A further area has been identified, above an administration block, and these panels have also been assessed. A qualified surveyor has confirmed there are no current defects and we have a full inspection and monitoring process in place to check there is no deterioration in the structure to ensure the team, patients and visitors are safe.”

This meant there was very little bonding to any reinforcements, thus it was weaker than normal concrete. On top of this, water was more likely to enter thanks to its structure, and this rusted any metal supports inside, all contributing to the limited lifespan.
