🔴 NHS doctors who are at risk of kidnap and death in Sudan are considering making their own way out of the country The SJDA UK has said it is in contact with 71 NHS doctors stuck Many trapped had travelled there to celebrate Eid with their families

Rather than wait, Dr Reem Taha, media officer for SJDA UK, said doctors were taking buses from Sudan to Egypt – a journey that makes them vulnerable to kidnap.

But Dr Taha said the situation was so unsafe for some that they had been forced to abandon their homes. “In some neighbourhoods there’s a total power cut and issues with water supply as well. So it’s just a very miserable situation to be in. You can just never predict when conflict will start or when the armed forces or the Rapid Support Forces will start fighting in one neighbourhood.”

Even if it could not be done because it was too dangerous, “we have a moral obligation to tell British nationals as soon as possible because they then need to make their own decisions”, she said. Questions have been raised about whether assistance will extend to Sudanese health workers without British passports who work in the NHS.
