Year-long delays have fallen slightly but 18-month waits have risen as hospitals continue to be under pressure in the run-up to winter.

The overall waiting list for routine NHS treatment in England has risen to a new record high of almost 7.8 million people.

Year-long delays have fallen slightly as 391,122 people in England had been waiting more than 52 weeks to start routine hospital treatment at the end of September, down from 396,643 at the end of August. The Government andThe number of patients seen within four hours in emergency departments fell to 70.2 per cent, down from 71.6 per cent in September. The figure hit a record low of 65.2 per cent in December 2022.

Some 59.3 per cent of cancer patients who had their first treatment in September after an urgent GP referral had waited less than two months, down from 62.8 per cent in August, NHS England data shows. The target is 85 per cent and will remain one of the key cancer measures following the streamlining of performance standards that will begin with October’s figures.
