The NHS is increasing efforts to protect the public from the Mpox virus by opening 12 new vaccination sites across England. This comes after another case of the more deadly Clade Ib strain was detected last week. While the overall risk to the UK population remains low, health officials urge eligible individuals, particularly men who have sex with men, to get vaccinated.

The NHS has ramped up efforts to protect Brits from the Mpox virus by announcing twelve new vaccination sites will open across England.

Last summer, the World Health Organization declared the Clade Ib outbreak a public health emergency following a surge in cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The strain has caused outbreaks in previously unaffected areas of the country, spreading across the globe to nations that had not previously reported Mpox.

Steve Russell, NHS national director for vaccination and screening, said: "The NHS is fully prepared to respond to Mpox and the latest cases of Clade 1b with local services pulling out all the stops to vaccinate those eligible since it first became present in England, and tens of thousands in priority groups already coming forward and getting protected.

The UKHSA has welcomed the rollout of the Mpox vaccine England. Dr Sema Mandal, Consultant Epidemiologist and Deputy Director at UKHSA, said: “It’s great to see Mpox vaccination now available in every region across England, offering gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men at highest risk the opportunity for vital protection against the disease.
