NHS explains little-known reason you could have stomach pain

There are a number of causes of stomach pain with many being little to worry about

If you're experiencing unexplained stomach pains, it's understandable to feel concerned. While many people turn to Google for answers, sometimes the most alarming health conditions are listed, which can heighten anxiety further.

However, there's a lesser-known, entirely harmless cause that might be behind your discomfort. According to the NHS, vitamins and minerals could be the culprit. The health service highlights that Vitamin C is one supplement that may trigger stomach pain when consumed in excessive amounts. Also called ascorbic acid, it's present in numerous everyday foods.

Excellent sources include oranges, peppers, strawberries, blackcurrants, broccoli, brussels sprouts and potatoes. If you're getting enough in your diet, you probably don't need to take the supplement, but if you do consume them, the NHS says that "adults aged 19 to 64 need 40mg of vitamin C a day.

" It warns: "Vitamin C cannot be stored in the body, so you need it in your diet every day. " But if you take too much, more than 1,000mg per day, it can cause: It adds: "These symptoms should disappear once you stop taking vitamin C supplements. " Vitamin C is not the only supplement that could cause stomach issues. The health service also notes that calcium, potassium, copper, and molybdenum can cause stomach pain.

If you take iron, it also notes that side effects of taking high doses of iron include constipation, feeling sick, stomach pain and being sick. It warns: "Very high doses of iron can be fatal, particularly if taken by children, so always keep iron supplements out of the reach of children.

You shouldn’t assume that the supplements are the cause of the problem. The NHS states that stomach pain can have many possible causes, including trapped wind, food poisoning, indigestion, and constipation. Other conditions linked to stomach pain include endometriosis, adenomyosis, IBS, appendicitis, gallstones, and kidney stones.
