GP surgeries have said they are unable to book appointments for patients or 'function as normal'
NHS services have been hit by a major global IT outage, with patients warned of longer waits, appointment cancellations and delays in getting medication.CrowdStrike, an American cybersecurity company, has confirmed the problem was caused by a “defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts”.Pharmacies and at least one NHS hospital have also been affected, with medicine deliveries and prescription access disrupted.
Patients have been warned their existing appointments may be cancelled and GPs say they are reverting to handwriting prescriptions for patients who have acute needs. James Bore, a chartered security professional, has said people are likely to die because of the global IT outage, adding the Crowdstrike problems seemed to stem from a single faulty file. An NHS spokesperson, said: “The NHS is aware of a global IT outage and an issue with EMIS, an appointment and patient record system, which is causing disruption in the majority of GP practices.
