The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has found that 60% of are worried about having to drop out of university because of juggling bills such as housing, energy and food on a student bursary.

The NHS is facing a midwifery crisis according to a new report which found that almost a third of students say they may be forced to quit their studies because of the financial burden of the course.

However, the report found that student midwives are working considerable overtime between their university coursework, placement and part-time jobs to make ends meet. We previously reported how nursing students are often forced to work up to 70 hours or take on debt to keep their heads above water with 'increasing' numbers being forced to drop out despite a national shortage.

The report also found that more than a third of midwifery students were so worried about the financial burden of their training that they struggle to sleep at night. And 70% had to take on additional debt to cover the cost of their studies, while almost 70% reported losing their benefits once training began.

"The university has quite strongly advocated that you shouldn't work outside of your studies because they say it puts you and the patients that you come into contact with at risk. But people feel like they have no choice - it's a double -edged sword. “With over half of midwifery students considering dropping out because they can’t afford to complete their course, the bursary, which has been frozen for years, needs to be raised urgently to reflect the cost of living in 2024.
