The NHS is going to use drones to carry urgent blood samples across London as part of a new trial.

Blood samples will be taken from Guy's Hospital to a lab at St Thomas' to be analysed - avoiding traffic in the capital.The pilot scheme will see them transported in less than two minutes, rather than half an hour by road.Jonathan Nicholson from the Civil Aviation Authority says the move could improve patient care.The drone flights will take a fraction of the time it takes to courier samples by road, officials said.

"The drone pilot combines two of our key priorities - providing the best possible patient care and improving sustainability," said Professor Ian Abbs, chief executive at Guy's and St Thomas'."We are proud to be the first trust in London to trial this innovative approach to help speed up blood sample analysis for our most urgent cases.
