Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust has now apologised to the family and admitted liability

Fozia Hanif died just days after giving birth to her second child, following the stillbirth of her first baby 11 months prior

Fozia’s death came just 11 months after the couple lost their daughter Anaya, who died at 38 weeks on May 12, last year, following a string of medical errors. An internal hospital investigation found Fozia’s planned caesarian date was three days after the day the baby should have been delivered.

Wajid, of Sparkbrook, Birmingham, said he and his wife were ‘overjoyed’ when Fozia discovered she was pregnant with Anaya.‘We were advised at Fozia’s 20-week scan that the baby was measuring big and that there would be extra monitoring of the baby’s growth. Wajid said trying to come to terms with losing Anaya was ‘hard enough’ and although Fozia’s death is not connected, to lose his wife and daughter in less than a year is something he’s not sure he’ll ‘ever be able to get over’.

Acting chief executive of the NHS trust, David Melbourne, has since offered ‘sincere and heartfelt apologies on behalf of the Trust’ into the failings.
