The NHS is urging people to start taking one vitamin which will not only help keep your bones, teeth and muscles healthy, but it will also help with ensuing that your immune system is at its best

Ensuring adequate vitamin D intake is crucial for not just this, but also for enhancing resistance to some diseases. Insufficient vitamin D levels can result in bone abnormalities like rickets in children and bone pain due to a condition known as osteomalacia in adults. So when should I start taking vitamin D? The NHS say that from late March/early April until the end of September, most people should be able to make all the vitamin D they need from sunlight as the body creates vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when outdoors.

How much vitamin D do I need? The NHS states: "Children from the age of 1 year and adults need 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day. This includes pregnant and breastfeeding women and people at risk of vitamin D deficiency. Babies up to the age of 1 year need 8.5 to 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day."
