The National Health Service (NHS) advises replacing your toothbrush every three months to avoid potential infection risks. The NHS emphasizes the importance of regular toothbrush replacement for removing plaque and bacteria, which can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. They also provide guidance on toothpaste selection and flossing techniques to ensure optimal oral hygiene.

The National Health Service ( NHS ) has issued a warning about a common daily practice that could unintentionally increase the risk of infection: not replacing toothbrushes frequently enough. The health service recommends replacing your toothbrush every three months to minimize infection risks, as stated in an online post. An NHS Foundation Trust website also advises: 'Change your toothbrush every three months when possible.

' They further suggest using a small or medium brush head for optimal access to all areas of the mouth.Regular toothbrush replacement is crucial for effectively removing plaque and bacteria from your teeth, according to the NHS. 'These actions will help to remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth which can cause tooth decay and gum disease,' they explain. Corringham Dental echoes this warning, stating: 'Other risks and issues involved with not replacing your toothbrush often enough include damage to your gums, inability to remove plaque from your teeth properly or gingivitis. Gingivitis can lead to infection, which can cause your teeth to fall out.' In addition to brushing twice daily, the NHS provides further guidance on toothpaste selection. They recommend using a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste containing 1350 to 1500ppm of fluoride (look for this information on the back of the toothpaste tube). Another helpful tip is to spit out the toothpaste after brushing but avoid rinsing your mouth. This allows the fluoride to remain on your teeth for a longer duration, contributing to stronger teeth. The NHS also highlights the importance of flossing, advising to 'tilt the bristle tips towards the gum line at 45 degrees' and use small, circular movements or vibrations to keep teeth clean and minimize infection risk. They conclude their advice by emphasizing a complete brushing routine: 'Brush the outsides, insides and chewing surfaces of your teeth, brushing each tooth surface for five seconds. Brushing your teeth should take two to three minutes total.'
