Norman was stunned to receive the diagnosis after a routine blood donation
A Northern Ireland grandad has opened up about undergoing a liver transplant 10 years ago after being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 53.
"The nurse told me that my blood was low in iron and urged me to get it checked. Being a man of course I didn't until the next time the blood donors came around when a different nurse detected the same thing so this time I got it checked. He explained: "The Lyons' are a stubborn bunch and as an engineer I always ask questions and need to know how things work. Eventually we negotiated with a surgeon to examine my liver and he told me he'd have a look.
Because of Norman's cancer, he couldn't be placed on the transplant list straight away, and had to wait several years for the right transplant to come along. Norman added: "The teams in both London and Belfast were exceptional and thanks to them, my quality of life today is absolutely fantastic. I'm back at work and also able to enjoy precious time with my five grandchildren.
In Northern Ireland, liver cancer incidence is highest in men and women living in the most deprived areas, with around 17 men and six women in every 100,000 diagnosed each year compared to 12 and four respectively in every 100,000 in the least deprived areas.
