'It isn't enough to tell people that things will be sh**- they know, they are living it'

Politicians from across the political spectrum in Northern Ireland have been reacting to this morning's statement from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in which he warned that October's budget is going to be "painful".

Taking to X, Alliance's Lagan Valley MP Sorcha Eastwood posted: "It isn't enough to tell people that things will be sh**- they know, they are living it! Where is the vision? The UK lost its way a long time ago & is in danger of not recognising it. We need a leader to inspire, not someone telling us how cr*p it is - how do we make it better!

“The so-called Labour Party is promising to inflict further hardship on working class people. Stormont was wrong to implement Tory cuts in the past, but the Executive should not roll over for Starmer and his ilk. Workers have just suffered through the worst cost-of-living crisis in living memory, public services are on the brink of collapse, yet the Prime Minister tells us there is more to come.

Elsewhere, the Ulster Unioninst Party MLA Steve Aiken took the opportunity to call out the Executive of which his party is a member, for failing to produce a Programme for Government. “It was also noteworthy that the PM went out of his way to praise the Police during the recent disturbances, telling the nation of his visits across our country, including Belfast. It was pleasing to hear the Prime Minister’s words, an approach in marked contrast to the ill-judged correspondence of the Department of Justice to our Chief Constable.
