According to new figures from the Communities Minister this week, since the changes to winter fuel payment eligibility were announced on July 29, 2024, 4,528 pension credit applications have been received. The figures, up to and including December 2, 2024, show an increase of 72% when compared against the same period in 2023.
He said: “That we have seen a 72% rise in the older people applying for pension credit since this cut by both the UK Government and the Executive shows how badly impacted older people were by the removal of the winter fuel payment. The payment was an important lifeline for many, alleviating the pressure and large bills that come with heating their homes during winter.
Groups advocating on behalf of pensioners have described the scrapping of the winter fuel payment as an "attack", with many relying on the yearly payment to heat their homes.
