Maria Creaney shared her story as part of a new Irish FA campaign aimed at tackling abusive behaviour towards match officials
A football referee from Belfast says she almost quit the game after being subjected to vile abuse during a match last year.The 37-year-old was the target to verbal abuse and threats from a coach during a game, leaving her in fear for her own safety and wellbeing.Maria is hoping a new Irish FA campaign called 'Catch Yourself On' can open the conversation around abusive behaviour towards football officials in Northern Ireland.
"I have made friends for life, and I have enjoyed so many positive experiences. I have played under the floodlights, and now I officiate under them."If I am not refereeing I am watching it or reading about it." Another rising star is teenage official Halle O'Brien who is just 16 years old. She did the Irish FA's referee's course two years ago after being inspired by her father.
"I love it. It is such a great thing to get into, and it is just about making the game as enjoyable and safe for everyone.
