Heaton-Harris has served as head of the Northern Ireland Office since 2022
Northern Ireland will have a new Secretary of State at some point this year after Chris Heaton-Harris announced his decision not to seek reelection in the upcoming UK General Election.
In a letter addressed to Sunak, Heaton-Harris confirmed it was his intention to remain in the Secretary of State post until the election, as he says he loves the ‘people, place and job’. Much of Heaton-Harris’ time in office at the NIO has been marred by political stalemate at Stormont, with the DUP pulling out of power-sharing arrangements over post-Brexit trading arrangements. His letter lists the negotiation of the Windsor Framework as one of his headline achievements.
