Nick Clegg, former deputy prime minister of the UK, is stepping down from his role as president of global affairs at Meta (formerly Facebook). The news comes after six years in Silicon Valley, where Clegg navigated the complex world of technology and public policy. His departure sparks speculation about his future endeavors, given his diverse career spanning journalism, lobbying, academia, politics, and Brussels bureaucracy.

Nick Clegg is out as number two at Meta , which was called Facebook when Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg recruited him Nick Clegg has largely avoided the public eye in the UK during his six years in Silicon Valley . After one rare private meeting also attended by David Cameron, those present noted a contrast between the former deputy prime minister and the prime minister he had served.

On the recommendation of Lord Richard Allan, his predecessor as Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam, Clegg was recruited by Facebook in 2018 and rose quickly. He is estimated to have earned nearly $3m a year while in California, and a reported bonus of $10m in 2022.

In his resignation statement, Clegg said he hopes to have “played some role in seeking to bridge the very different world of tech and politics”. He says he is “thrilled” that his deputy Joel Kaplan is stepping into his shoes. Kaplan is a prominent member of the Republican Party, who was deputy chief of staff in George W Bush’s White House.

The former deputy prime minister did not mention the UK specifically at all – a contrast to his incoming assertion years ago as party leader that “Britain a place of tolerance and pluralism”. Instead he declared “the European cause is my identity” and mentioned an oldheadline – “Is there ANYTHING British about Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg?” – without bothering to refute it directly.
