“Sorry, that's my mom—I’m just on an interview, Mom!” Nicola Coughlan is sitting in what I can only assume is her mother’s house, presumably in her hometown of Galway, Ireland. Through my Zoom screen and over her shoulder, I catch glimpses of what appear to be patterned wallpaper and frilly antique furniture. I just barely hear her mother pop in and out of the room at the start of our 20-minute chat.
” And I thought, 'God, if I could take some of that and apply it to myself, it would really help.' It's a fake-it-’till-you-make-it mentality. Sometimes on a carpet, I will not put on a persona, but it's a slightly out-of-body thing. I’m not who I am on the day-to-day. I remember my friends asking about the Met Gala. They were like, 'How did you feel?' I was like, 'I don't know.” Because I don't know that I believed I was there… It's quite bizarre.
