Oscar-winning director Susanne Bier is in talks to helm the sequel, which reunites the Hollywood icons 26 years after the original.
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are set to reunite for a sequel to the 1998 romantic fantasy film, Practical Magic. As reported by Deadline, the duo will reprise their roles as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, 26 years after they first portrayed the characters. Oscar-winning director Susanne Bier is in talks with Warner Bros. Pictures to direct the film, having previously worked with both leading stars.
Bier directed Sandra in Netflix's Bird Box, which became the platform's most-watched film within 28 days of its release. She has also collaborated with Nicole twice, on HBO's The Undoing and the recent Netflix series The Perfect Couple, which was released in September last year. Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original film, is returning to pen the screenplay, while Sandra and Nicole will also co-produce the project alongside Denise Di Novi. The original film, directed by Griffin Dunne, was based on Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel of the same name. It marked the only time the two Hollywood icons have worked together, making the sequel an exciting prospect for fans. The plot centred around two sisters raised by their eccentric aunts in a small town, facing prejudice from their neighbours and a curse that threatens their chances of finding true love, reports the Mirror. The film boasted an ensemble cast, including Sandra, Nicole, Dianne West, Stockard Channing, Aidan Quinn, and Goran Visnjic. Upon its release, the movie raked in $68.3 million at the box office, falling short of its $75 million budget, and garnered a mixed response from critics. However, despite its initial lukewarm reception, the film has evolved into a cult classic over time. Fans have consistently shown their affection for the movie, applauding its cast, soundtrack, and feminist themes. One enthusiast on Rotten Tomatoes described it as: 'Iconic. Great soundtrack, great performances, good ensemble, and Aidan Quinn is the best romantic lead.' Another fan wrote: 'As the title indicates, 'Practical Magic' is packed with titular magic but not only - it contains an empowering narrative, highlights the importance of sisterhood, and discusses how difficult it is to walk away from domestic abuse.' A release date for Practical Magic 2 is yet to be revealed
