There are currently over 46,000 people on the Northern Ireland Housing Executive waiting list
The Northern Ireland Housing Executive has sold off 2,040 homes in the past five years, it has been revealed.
Mr McCrossan said: "It’s heart-breaking to hear the stories of families who have been forced to live in temporary accommodation or hotels, often with young children and far from their home community, because we simply don’t have the properties to house them. Mr McCrossan had previously raised the Right to Buy scheme directly with Communities Minister Gordon Lyons and said he was "disappointed" there were no plans to review it. He said it will take more than ending the scheme to resolve housing issues in Northern Ireland, but that social housing needs to be retained.
In a bid to combat the worsening housing crisis, earlier this week the Communities Minister announced funding to build more affordable homes for lower income tenants as a strand of the Housing Supply Strategy. The Intermediate Rent scheme will offer funding in the form of a long-term, low interest government loan to an operator who will develop a new supply of affordable homes for rent.
Minister Lyons said: "As Minister for Housing, it is my priority to bring forward a range of measures to ensure working families have access to safe, secure, and affordable housing.
