Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, announced that she will run for president, becoming the first confirmed candidate to challenge former President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination in 2024
In a video released on social media, Mrs Haley said: “It’s time for a new generation of leadership to rediscover fiscal responsibility and secure our borders.”
In a veiled criticism of her opponent, she added that Republicans had lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections. The candidate also hinted at a softer message on ‘culture war’ issues by urging focus on “not differences but similarities,” while referencing her Indian heritage.
The former US ambassador to the UN also discussed geopolitical threats such as Russia, China, and Iran. Mrs Haley is the first of several Republican candidates expected to challenge Mr Trump, including Ron deSantis, the governor of Florida, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
