Nicola Bulley's family finally given closure as they tell those with missing loved ones to 'keep that hope alive' | RachReports

As the sun set on Lancashire Police headquarters, the country's media gathered to hear the news which would bring an end to the investigation into the disappearance of mum-of-two Nicola Bulley.

The public interest has been unprecedented, with several arrests made of people who have trespassed onto land, attempted to break into buildings and trolled Nicola's family on social media. Some even hacked the social media accounts of Nicola's partner, Paul Ansell. But for the last three weeks, the police have remained steadfast in their stance that, while keeping an open mind, they believed Nicola had somehow entered the River Wyre in St Michael's on Friday, January 27.

"We recognise the impact that Nicola's disappearance has had not only on her family and friends but on the people of St Michael's. We would like to thank all who have helped in what has been a complex and highly emotional investigation. Today's development is not the outcome any of us would have wanted but we hope it can at least start to provide some answers for Nicola's loved one's who remain foremost in our thoughts.

On January 10, the officers had attended Nicola's home in Inskip due to a concern for welfare. No one was arrested but Nicola's vulnerabilities were identified. When Paul called 999 an immediate 'high risk missing person' search was launched. Dogs, underwater search teams and the police helicopter were on the scene in St Michael's within the hour, and a press release was circulated across news and social media channels.
