The blockbuster sports rights deal sees Nine become the official Olympics broadcaster for the next five games, including Brisbane 2032.
Nine Entertainment will broadcast the Summer and Winter Olympics for the next decade, including the Brisbane 2032 games, paying more than $300 million to snatch the rights from rival broadcaster Channel Seven.
Executives say that taking over the reins from Seven will give Nine the chance to use the Olympics broadcasts as a “tent pole” to promote the company’s media assets across TV, publishing, radio and streaming service Stan. Nine is the publisher ofBut media companies often make a loss on the expensive deals struck with the IOC, with broadcasters footing the bill for production costs.
“A major sporting event like this and a partnership with the IOC becomes a very important pillar to defining who Nine is as a media business,” chief executive Mike Sneesby said when asked about the costs of the deal.To get the deal over the line, Nine executives flew to Switzerland last April to make a secret pitch to the IOC’s media team. Accompanying Mr Sneesby to Lausanne wasshow host Karl Stefanovic.
Nine’s deal will mean the company’s radio arm that includes Sydney’s 2GB, Melbourne’s 3AW and Brisbane’s 4BC becomes an audio broadcast partner.But there are still unanswered questions about what Olympics content that Nine chooses to put on Stan, therefore behind a paywall.
