Nintendo talks new platform & implies Switch 2 backwards compatibility

It sounds like you’ll definitely get to transfer your Switch accounts to Nintendo’s next console according to Doug Bowser.

Nintendo’s still keeping mum about the Switch 2 no matter what you ask them about it When it comes to the Nintendo Switch 2, the only detail Nintendo has so much as hinted at is that it will retain the existing account system for the current Switch.

This is something Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser also corroborated recently, adding that the goal with the account system is to allow for a smoother transition when the company launches its next console. He was also quizzed on the rumours of the Switch 2 making a secret showing at Gamescom this past summer, but, unsurprisingly, refused to comment on that. ‘I can’t comment – or I won’t comment, I should say – on the rumours that are out there,’ Bowser tells Inverse. ‘But one thing we’ve done with the Switch to help with that communication and transition is the formation of the Nintendo Account. ‘In the past, every device we transitioned to had a whole new account system. Creating the Nintendo Account will allow us to communicate with our players if and when we make a transition to a new platform, to help ease that process or transition.’ The Switch 2 retaining the same account system would also mean you’d get to transfer your digital Switch games over to the newer console, which itself feeds into the idea that there will be backwards compatibility involved. Bowser adds that the goal is to ‘minimise the dip you typically see in the last year of one cycle and the beginning of another,’ which suggests that Nintendo is trying to keep people invested in the current Switch, even after they announce its successor. This does line up with comments on how Nintendo still has plans to propose new Switch games going forward, despite chatter of the Switch 2 launching next year. It also makes sense considering the current Switch remains popular; recent sales figures from Japan are very healthy for a console that’s over six years old. Plus, not everyone will be able or willing to jump ship to a new console straight away.
