Utah is 15-4 in season-openers under head coach Kyle Whittingham. A 33-17 loss to USC in 2020 is the only season opening setback at home in Whittingham’s tenure. Many of those 15 wins have come by lopsided margins.

Upgrades have been most evident on offense. Cam Rising’s healthy return at quarterback coincides with new experienced targets for him downfield in USC transfer Dorian Singer and Syracuse transfer Damien Alford. Singer, who had a 1,000-yard season at Arizona two years ago before taking a step back with the Trojans a year ago, has dazzled his coaches.
“With us and Utah, there’s not a whole lot we don’t know about each other” Southern Utah coach DeLane Fitzgerald said on his weekly radio show. “They know exactly what we’re going to do and when we’re going to do it. We know what they’re going to do and when they’re going to do it. We have to execute better than they do.”Utah does not have a clear-cut lead running back and Whittingham anticipates dividing snaps to see who emerges.
