A big day by Eva Shevlin and Savanna McHale helped No. 19 Weehawken repeat as Hudson County champs.
Weehawken players celebrate after winning the Hudson County softball final against Bayonne at 64th Street Stadium in North Bergen, NJ on Saturday, May 18, 2024.for Weehawken, Shevlin found herself in a position to help the No. 19 ranked Indians make history in the Hudson County final yet again.With two outs in the top of the sixth inning and the game tied at 3-3, Shevlin laced a single to right field to score two runs and put Weehawken up 5-3 on Bayonne.
With Weehawken’s win, the Indians are the first team to repeat as Hudson County softball champions since the tournament expanded to include all Hudson County teams in 2010. The win also makes Weehawken the first team at the school to win back-to-back county titles since 1947 and the first girls program ever to repeat as a county champ in any sport.
After giving up a first inning two-run homer to Bayonne’s ace and two-way star Caitlin Gaetani to put Bayonne up 2-0 after one inning, McHale was dejected and nervous, as was Roder. Gaetani has 16 homers and 40 RBI in the circle for the Bees and has been just as good if not better in the circle, where she has 227 K’s and a 1.72 ERA and 77 hits allowed in 130.1 innings.
“Because I was able to hit that, I think other people were able to see that we can do it,” McHale said. “And if we can do it, then we’ll put the ball in play and if we put the ball in play then we can get ahead.” “We were telling the girls we have nothing to lose. We’re predicted to lose as the second seed, so go out there and have some fun,” Roder said. “But of course there’s additional stress to defend the title and come back.”
