The Opposition has said electronic monitoring requirements are 'extraordinary' after revelations in Senate estimates on Wednesday.
At least two former detainees convicted of either murder or attempted murder were released into the community with no requirement to wear ankle bracelets, the Senate has heard. The revelations increased pressure on the government, which has been under fire over its handling of the fallout from a High Court case that led to the release of 153 immigration detainees. Earlier this year, it was revealed that seven of the 153 released detainees had been convicted of either murder or attempted murder.
" Ankle bracelets and curfews weren't a panacea and people subject to such measures could still reoffend, he added. Of the 153 former detainees, 76 are subject to electronic monitoring and 68 to a curfew, Home Affairs officials told a Senate estimates hearing on Wednesday. Of 39 convicted sex offenders, 26 aren't being electronically monitored and 27 aren't subject to curfews.
