Two key upcoming defence reports, including the acquisition of nuclear submarines, will come with a hefty price tag but Richard Marles says the budget isn’t limitless.

A major review of the nation’s military will not result in an open chequebook to fund new weapons, Defence Minister Richard Marles insists, even as the government ramps up spending in response to the strategic challenge posed by China.

Two key government reports – the Defence Strategic Review, or DSR, and the AUKUS nuclear-submarine taskforce – will be delivered to Mr Marles in the coming weeks which will define his tenure as defence minister.The final draft of the DSR, prepared by former defence minister Stephen Smith and former Defence Force chief Sir Angus Houston, is due to be handed to Mr Marles this week, with expectations it will recommend an.

Last October’s budget papers showed defence spending was forecast to grow from 1.96 per cent as a share of gross domestic product in 2022-23 to 2.23 per cent in 2029-30 but this trajectory had not factored in the recommendations from the review or the AUKUS costs.Mr Marles denied the public would find the cost of new submarines “staggering” when the government responded to AUKUS report and rejected concerns the project would cannibalise funding from other parts of the navy and Defence Force.

He will also inspect recently deployed Australian troops who have joined the UK-led training mission for new Ukrainian army recruits,Mr Marles would not be drawn on whether Australia would join the “tank coalition” now providing tanks to Ukraine but said the government would continue to assess its contribution for Kyiv.
