Traffic congestion in Manchester city centre is expected to worsen this weekend despite the lack of a temporary relief route for Deansgate.

No plans are in place for a Deansgate ‘relief route’ this weekend, despite Manchester being set to face more heavy Christmas traffic. The city centre thoroughfare was at a standstill for much of Saturday and Sunday (December 14 and 15), in what transport bosses warned would be the busiest weekend of the year. Thousands flocked to Manchester as Co-op Live hosted two Paul McCartney gigs, shoppers enjoyed the Christmas markets, and football fans thronged to the Manchester derby at The Etihad.

Although traffic caused delays across the city centre, much ire has been directed towards roadworks on Deansgate. Work started in August to upgrade bike lanes and make the road a one-way, southbound-only route for motorists heading out of town. But council chiefs have confirmed to the M.E.N. no plans are in place for an alternative relief route in the area, believing there is nowhere nearby drivers could go. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), which has no role in managing the roadworks, will be carrying out live traffic management as usual this coming weekend (December 21 and 22), it said in a new statement. “It’s been an exceptionally busy few weeks with a lot of major sporting, music and other events taking place and people enjoying the festive period,” said TfGM’s chief network officer Danny Vaughan. “While we’ve encouraged people who can to use public transport, we’ve also worked really hard to help people who are driving, including managing signal timings on key roads to help keep traffic flowing and by providing over a thousand of additional park and ride spaces last weekend.” TfGM is also launching another pop-up park and ride, using the University’s Cecil Street car park (M15 6GF). Passengers will be able to park for free, and walk five minutes to Oxford Road bus stops, where services can take them into tow
