A Lions premiership is set to do more than end a two-decade title drought, with one club legend declaring it will completely change the game in Queensland.
Brisbane Lions trailblazer Emma Zielke has forecast that, irrespective of Saturday’s grand final outcome, AFL in Queensland will be changed forever.
“No doubt it will have an impact within the grassroots and within the younger leagues with men and women,” Zielke said. Already AFL Queensland has recorded record participation numbers, announcing in August more than 68,000 registered players had laced up the boots. These did not include the 35,000 school athletes, with its most junior program AusKick garnering the most growth.
Charlie Cameron, Eric Hipwood and Cam Rayner of the Lions celebrate a goal during the AFL Preliminary Final clash with Carlton.Zielke has partnered with the Jonnie Walker In Her Shoes campaign, an initiative which recognises the founding women of the AFLW and the path they have paved.
