Anthony Albanese has pushed Europe to resolve FTA negotiations before the self-imposed deadline of Christmas.

Anthony Albanese has warned senior European leaders Australia will not sign a free trade deal for the sake of it, as he pushed them for a resolution before theMr Albanese conveyed the message during separate talks with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on the sidelines of the G20 summit in India.

“Ursula von der Leyen was quite positive, but we will wait and see the issues, and our officials have continued to have discussions. But I would like to see the Australia EU Free Trade Agreement settled as soon as possible.”In doing so, the Prime Minister defended himself from growing murmurs at home about the amount of time he is having to spend abroad.

The payoff to Europe for offering greater market access would be a potential scrapping of the luxury car tax, and tighter rules on how Australian producers label European geographic indicators like Parmesan, feta and prosecco.Financial Review Senator Farrell and Mr Albanese believe that if a deal is not done by Christmas, all momentum will be lost due to domestic pressures caused by EU elections next year.“It’s quite clear with the timetables that are there, that the prospects of that being done are much greater this year than next year,” the Prime Minister said.
