Nottingham City Council leader, Neghat Khan, has pledged that there will be no student accommodation at the Broad Marsh development, stating that the city 'has got enough of it.' The pledge comes as final proposals for the remaining Broad Marsh development are set to be revealed in March. Khan expressed a desire to see more families and working-class people living at the Broad Marsh, prioritizing permanent residential accommodation over purpose-built student accommodation.
Nottingham City Council's leader has pledged there will be no student accommodation at the Broad Marsh development as she says Nottingham has "got enough of it". The news has been met with relief by some as final proposals for the rest of the Broad Marsh development are set to be revealed in March.
Major projects include around 790 bed spaces at a development on Alfreton Road, set to be completed by the coming academic year in September. Beyond that, Councillor Khan has suggested she now wants to see fewer student housing projects being approved. "Our ambition is to see more housing and more families and working-class people moving in there rather than the focus on students. If we want to grow the economy, then we need to look at the type of housing that we need and we need to make sure that we can attract people.
The vision for that remaining half is for a mixed-use site to be created, comprising of 1,600 new homes and 20,000 square metres of office, commercial and leisure space. Hilary Silvester, the executive vice-president of Nottingham Civic Society, reacted to Councillor Khan's pledge on the future development by saying: "What a relief.
The major point of uncertainty over the Broad Marsh area has been the demolition of the remaining half of the shopping centre, the frame of which will be retained as part of the design. That was subject to three failed bids to the previous Conservative government's Levelling Up Fund.
