Prominent Voice No campaigner Warren Mundine has questioned how the NSW Labor government's plan to develop a treaty framework was going to help Aboriginal people and called the move a 'talk fest', addressing Premier Chris Minns that there was a cheaper solution.

'No one wants these things': Warren Mundine calls the NSW government's move for Aboriginal treaty a 'distraction'

Consultations with Aboriginal communities across the state will be the first step in the process of developing a formal agreement with the commissioners engaged for a fixed term appointment of two years. “How will this help Aboriginal people? They want practical outcomes, get kids in school, parents into jobs so they can look at buying a house and taking their family on holiday.”

The two main objectives outlined was to create an agreement which would be"desirable" while also determining what it"could look like", with the commissioners engaging with Indigenous communities in metropolitan, rural, regional and remote parts of the state. Mr Harris has said the process and delivery in Closing the Gap was"absolutely relevant" and that a lot of money was spent on Aboriginal programs but the"results aren't there". “NZ have had a treaty for 200 years and their results aren’t much different to ours. It’s a distraction and virtue signalling - ‘Look at us, we’re spending $5 million to do this'. It’s not about money, it’s about outcomes," he said.“NSW is broke, we know that and this money magically comes out.”
