A petition to increase the handout to more than £100 in line with inflation has gathered more than 17,000 signatureshas no plans to revise the arrangements for the bonus, which has stayed at £10 since it was introduced in 1972.is already carrying out a range of spending cuts to fill a “£22bn black hole” in the public finances, and increasing it to eleven times its value overnight would be hugely costly.
Scrapping the bonus altogether for 17 million people would save the Treasury £175m a year but it would be seen as controversial at the same time as the Chancellor withdrawing the a pledge to keep winter fuel allowance and other pensioner benefits was missing from Labour’s manifesto
