and he doesn't get struck down brawling with bad guys, either: he sacrifices himself to ensure the safety of lover Madeleine Swann and their daughter Mathilde.
"In my first meeting with Daniel and the producers, they said that's how they wanted the story," Fukunaga recently told"They felt that was an ending. I was like, 'Well, it's a result of an ending, but we don't know what happens. It has to be earned.'" Fukunaga and co-writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade"tied [Bond's demise] into the central theme of the story" by making Safin's weapon of choice a DNA-tagged virus. In their final showdown, Safin injects Bond with a dose that's linked to Madeleine and Mathilde, meaning that, if he ever came into close contact with either of them ever again, they would die.
