Actor Noel Clarke faces a libel trial against The Guardian after failing to have the newspaper's defence dismissed in court. The case centers around allegations of sexual harassment published in 2021 and 2022.
Actor Noel Clarke suffered a setback in his £10 million libel case against The Guardian yesterday when his attempt to have the newspaper's defence dismissed was unsuccessful. The case stems from articles published in 2021 and 2022 that accused Clarke of sexual harassment , including groping, bullying, and sending explicit images to women he encountered through work between 2004 and 2019.
Clarke's lawyer, Philip Williams, argued before the High Court that one specific allegation of sending a sexually explicit image in May 2015 was impossible because Clarke hadn't met the alleged recipient by that time. Williams further claimed that the deleted online conversations cited in the articles were innocuous and merely involved three journalists discussing minor revisions to their stories. He pointed to the alleged lack of police interest in the case, stating that they hadn't even interviewed Clarke. However, Mrs Justice Steyn denied Clarke's request to strike out The Guardian's defence, reserving her detailed explanation for a written judgment. The trial between Clarke and The Guardian is now scheduled to commence on March 3rd, where the court will determine the validity of the newspaper's claims regarding Clarke's alleged sexual harassment of 20 women
