By the end of the first week, more than 11,000 visitors had stopped by.
on June 1, the Noel Wien Public Library in Fairbanks continues to see patrons stream in from the community.
According to the Fairbanks North Star Borough, the library saw 1,661 patrons on its opening day, significantly more than its pre-renovation average of just under a thousand daily users. While things have slowed down since, Public Libraries Director Jamia Alexander Ball said numbers are still higher than they were at the library before renovations took place. “We have also had a lot of signups for summer reading, so that’s awesome.
“We’re so excited to open to the public and see all of our patrons again and to have this great, beautiful space. It’s been really wonderful to do programming,” Ball later added. The North Pole Branch, Meanwhile, has returned to its traditional hours now that it no longer serves as the main branch of the Fairbanks library system.
Some parts of the renovation are still coming to fruition. The café at Noel Wien has not opened yet, while staff await the arrival of some shelving end panels.Borough Mayor Bryce Ward spoke about the re-opening at last Thursday’s meeting of the borough assembly, saying, “If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, they’re doing a great job, and really appreciate all that staff time that went into moving out of the library and back in, Public Works, and everyone that was involved.
