The storm is about 870km north-west of Mackay, with sustained winds of 65km/h, and meteorologists expect it to strengthen to a category one cyclone on Wednesday afternoon before intensifying into a category three system several hours later.forecasts the storm to remain well offshore, but it might bring large waves and strong winds to exposed coastal areas of Queensland and northern New South Wales from Thursday.
Tropical cyclone likely to form in the Coral Sea later today, remaining well offshore of the Queensland coast. Dangerous coastal conditions are expected along the southern and central Queensland coast over coming days.
