Rising prices in Spain and the Canary Islands are prompting holidaymakers to seek more affordable destinations for their winter sun escapes. North Africa, particularly Egypt and Tunisia, are emerging as popular alternatives, offering value for money and family-friendly options.

Spain and the Canary Islands, traditional havens for Brits seeking winter sunshine and family-friendly resorts, are facing a challenge as rising prices push budget-conscious travelers to explore alternative destinations. This trend is highlighted by insights from travel giant TUI, which has observed the growing popularity of North Africa. TUI Group CEO, Sebastien Ebel, noted a noticeable shift in British holiday patterns, stating, 'What we see is more people going to Egypt in winter .

' Ebel emphasized that value for money is crucial for holidaymakers, particularly a new segment of customers with limited income but a desire to travel abroad. 'We also see quite often new customers who have less income but still want to travel, and they have a budget of €1,000/£800 per vacation. If they don't see it in Spain, then they look for alternatives, and they find alternatives.' As Spain grapples with rising living costs, overcapacity issues, and local resistance to mass tourism, countries like Egypt and Tunisia are emerging as affordable options for winter getaways, especially for families. 'There is a shift, especially in the family segment, to cheaper destinations,' he added, highlighting the financial pressures faced by typical holidaymakers. EasyJet Holidays has also reported a surge in bookings to often-neglected destinations like Egypt and Morocco. Garry Wilson, the firm's CEO, attributed this increased interest to significant improvements in hospitality and amenities that have made these locations more appealing to international tourists, according to the Express. As holidaymakers prioritize value without compromising sunshine, North Africa's rising popularity signals a change in winter vacation trends. For those considering swapping Spain for North Africa, the region offers a compelling combination of sun-kissed beaches, rich cultural heritage, and exceptional value for money
