A captured North Korean soldier fighting for Russia in Ukraine has revealed details about his deployment, lack of knowledge about the conflict, and the high casualty rates among his comrades. He also shed light on the treatment of captured North Korean troops by Russian forces.
A North Korea n soldier fighting for Russia in Ukraine has offered startling insights after being captured on the battlefield. He is one of the 12,000 troops that Russia has 'loaned' from North Korea to aid its territorial gains in Ukraine since October. This young soldier is among the fortunate few, captured as a prisoner of war (POW) by Ukraine in Russia's border region of Kursk earlier this year.
Many of his comrades are believed to have been used as 'cannon fodder' to minimize losses to the Russian military. In newly released footage, the soldier claims he was unaware that he was being deployed to fight in Russia. Still recovering from his injuries, he told Ukrainian officials: 'I did not know before coming to Russia that I would be fighting here, in Russia, and I did not even know who we were fighting against.' The POW stated he arrived in Russia aboard a cargo ferry with over 100 other soldiers. He received no training on Russian weaponry but asserted that several North Korean soldiers were instructed on its use. The unnamed soldier recounted to his interrogator: 'There were a lot of casualties when I was there alone, starting from a battle on January 3. Overall, it is hard to answer about such large scale numbers.'This revelation follows a report by South Korea's intelligence agency (NIS) alleging that some North Korean soldiers were ordered to commit suicide to avoid capture by Ukrainian forces. White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby echoed these claims late last year, adding that captured troops fear severe retribution against their families if they surrender. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky shared the interview with the soldier on social media, writing: 'Intelligence data on the movement of such troops to Russian territory, their training and complete information isolation have been confirmed by the prisoners. All the facts about North Korea’s involvement in this war will be established.
