The council worked with consultancy Ekos to assess its grass, blaes and synthetic pitches as well as considering whether they were used for football or other sports such as cricket, hockey or athletics.
North Lanarkshire Council has completed a review of its community sports pitches and is taking various actions to improve these services.
During the assessment consultation with clubs showed that most were satisfied with the surfaces available to them, but less so with regard to grass with many complaining that play conditions had deteriorated, especially equipment such as posts and fencing. While football accounts for by far the largest use of pitches, rugby, hockey, cricket and athletics were all considered by the consultants, who drew up plans to promote and develop each sport.
Actions to be taken include introducing a new approach to grass pitch maintenance to ensure the most popular pitches are attended to more frequently, continued replacement of 2G and 3G pitches, and to repurpose grass pitches which are not in demand as well as blaes pitches, with those in schools to be replaced.
