We previously announced that 39 council-run community centres and leisure facilities are to close in North Lanarkshire including five out of eight swimming pools - a petition has been launched to save them.
Community centres and leisure facilities in North Lanarkshire have been described as a "lifeline" after the council announced that 39 facilities will shut their doors for good, over the next two years.
They are now calling for the council to reconsider their decision, investigate the possibility of additional funding through the Strathclyde Pension Fund reduction and to conduct a public consultation - so that the voices of residents are heard. It reads: "As a resident of North Lanarkshire, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision made by the North Lanarkshire Council to close 39 facilities across our region, including libraries and sports centres.
"It is important to note that closing these facilities would disproportionately affect vulnerable members of our community who rely on them as safe spaces for learning, exercise, and socialising. The facilities will be a lifeline for many. By closing libraries alone we risk limiting access to knowledge for children who may not have resources at home or adults seeking employment opportunities through online resources.
Councillor Jim Logue, leader of North Lanarkshire Council, previously said: “Making decisions on the future of community facilities has been overwhelmingly difficult.
