The study found flame retardants are present in most cars driven in the United States and may pose a health risk. But how much, experts say, is still unclear.

Traffic flows in the 6600 block of North Central Expressway on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, in Dallas. Two vehicles were speeding about 6:20 p.m. on March 30 at the location when both drivers lost control causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles. Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice faces eight charges in connection with the multivehicle hit-and-run crash, police announced Wednesday.

While individual car cabin temperature wasn’t directly measured, the researchers used data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s onlineOPEs were the most abundant out of all 49 flame retardants detected. One particular OPE, called tris phosphate , had an outsized presence compared with any other flame retardant. It was also the primary one found in car seat foam. The overall ambient temperatures ran anywhere from around 23 degrees Fahrenheit to 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
