An interesting tale
A Northampton pub was once the scene of a bizarre incident where a man tried to shoot his girlfriend - but only fired blanks. The Gasometer, which was demolished in the 1960s, features in Last Orders: A History and Directory of Northampton Pubs and Inns trading before 1945.
Writer Knibb said the pub "wasn't the most salubrious" of establishments and wishes he could have "visited just once to say I drank at the Gasometer". It dated from 1875 but only survived to the 1960's when the area was cleared for the St Peter's Way development. Owners Phipps Northampton Brewery Company then wanted to build a hotel and by 1954, plans were underway.
However, the most notorious incident to happen there dated back to 1899 after there was an attempted murder in the street outside. James Richardson, 43, had been "out walking" with 17-year-old Annie Field, Knibb writes.
