Northern has been run by the government since 2020, but delay repay compensation shot up since Labour took office

Passengers have slammed Northern rail as ‘the enemy of my life’ after the firm paid out £2.4 million in delay repay compensation last year.

“Northern is the enemy of my life,” she said. “I’ll set off three or four hours earlier when I need to be somewhere by a certain time because I don’t trust the trains to not be cancelled or delayed, even though the journey takes one hour maximum.” Matt Rice, Northern’s chief operating officer, also apologised for ‘recent performance’ and said the firm is ‘working hard to address issues with traincrew availability so we can improve reliability for our customers’.

Bev Craig, Labour leader of Manchester council, is confident the government is capable of tackling poor rail performance in the north.
