Following a spectacular display on Thursday night, experts predict another potential sighting of the Northern Lights tonight. Geomagnetic activity from the sun has intensified, prompting a red alert for possible sightings across the UK.
Following a mesmerising display that graced the skies on Thursday night, the Met Office and Aurorawatch UK have forecasted that the Northern Lights might make another glowing appearance tonight.
The red alert issued suggests that 'it is likely that aurora will be visible by eye and camera from anywhere in the UK. ' Experts recommend the best viewing time, assuming clear skies, to be after 10pm when it's completely dark. In the northern hemisphere, most of this activity takes place within a band known as the aurora oval, spanning latitudes between 60 and 75 degrees. When the activity intensifies, this expands to cover a larger area which explains why displays can occasionally be seen as far south as the UK. The Northern Lights have been spotted all across the UK in 2024.
Speaking to the PA news agency, he said: "My research focuses on the physics of the connections between the Sun and the Earth."
