The potential short-term breakthrough comes ahead of a key rail meeting on Wednesday

Train operator Northern says it has reached an 'interim agreement' with the union representing conductors over Sunday working across Greater Manchester and the north west.

Northern said it had put a 'four month offer' to the RMT union, which is now expected to review the potential deal before putting it to members in a vote.In the longer term, however, Sundays will need to be brought into the working week, something that requires a mandate from the Transport Secretary, Louise Haigh, reports The Northern Agenda.

"This forces people to drive - or not bother going into Manchester. Quite ironic really considering Manchester was at the historical centre of developing commercial railways back in 1825." Sundays are currently outside the working week for the majority of conductors in the North West. That's because of an agreement which was inherited by Northern Trains Limited when it was set up to run services in 2020.

State-run Northern is expected to place an updated recovery plan before the committee, chaired by the mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, on Wednesday. Mr Burnham has previously said the operator's performance was 'falling far short of what passengers in Greater Manchester and the wider north deserve' because of the number of cancelled services and Sunday 'do not travel' warnings.
