Foreign Minister Penny Wong has clarified her stance after she urged the United Kingdom to share stories of its colonial past in a speech in London overnight.
Ms Wong gave a major policy speech at Kings College in London on Tuesday where she encouraged the UK to share “uncomfortable” stories in an effort to modernise its relationship with nations in the Indo-Pacific.

It’s no longer who we are. One in two Australians was born overseas or have a parent born overseas.” “I think the narrative and story of who Australia really is, is an enormously powerful part of our foreign policy and I intend to deploy it.”
Defence Minister Richard Marles vocalised support for his colleague’s comments and agreed that looking at a country's past fostered “meaningful engagement” in its future.
